Today, dealers pay egregious fees to other car shopping websites in order to spotlight cars they want to get rid of. As a car shopper, it’s way too easy to forget that this is happening. After all, we can’t see how much money is being exchanged… on the surface, it seems disconnected from the market. The reality is that these fees have a direct, significant impact on list prices we see. Think about it: how else is the dealer going to make up for the cost of those fees?
At Visor, we don’t believe that dealers are “the enemy.” True, the logistics and mechanics of buying a car today leaves much to be desired. But we’d venture to say that most car dealerships are doing their best to balance making a living and doing right by the car buyer. It’s the other websites that we don’t like.
So, for the past few months, we’ve been pondering a question:
How can we create a win-win scenario for both car buyers and dealers, without a single dollar going through us?
While there are many potential answers to this question - some of which we are actively exploring, one stood out as being both easy and obvious.
The Clearance Lot is a space for dealers to highlight cars that they just want off their lot, and for buyers to get a bangin’ deal.
No ads, no bias, just discounted cars.
By not taking a dollar from either the dealer or the shopper, we’re creating a win-win-win scenario:
The dealer doesn’t have to pay a fee to list a car (and therefore artificially inflate their list price).
The buyer is seeing the best deal that a dealer can offer and doesn’t have to worry about bias.
We don’t have to tolerate any games by dealers and can maintain the list however we please.
We’re starting small with this feature. Just a few highlighted cars, in the hopes that dealers (like you?) reach out and contribute.
No fees, no gotchas, just deals.
Heck, you may come to the page at times and see no cars available. We’ll see how this goes! And don’t be shy - let us know what you think.
